Start the month with a mental and emotional detox at Plum Village Philippines’ 4-day retreat. Headed by Buddhist monk Thich Chan Phap Kham, a Dharma teacher since 2004, the retreat aims to hone the participants’ meditative skills in order to help them cope with the stresses of daily life. It will be done in the tradition of Zen master, poet, and teacher Thich Nhat Hanh, and is designed for both beginners and advanced practitioners. The retreat involves meditation sessions, Dharma teaching sessions, group activities, exercises, and discussions. Participants can opt to join the full 4-day session or the 2-day weekend session.

Learn not one but two techniques in this 2-day calligraphy workshop. Day 1 focuses on brush lettering with the use of a pointed brush. Basic lettering structures, pressure application, and stroke techniques will be covered to help the student become adept at the fundamentals of brush lettering. Day 2, meanwhile, focuses on Gothic calligraphy also known as Blackletter or Old English. It is a unique technique traditionally used in Medieval European documents. In the workshop, students will learn letter construction, spacing, and proportions while also learning a little something about its history. Participants can join both days for maximum learning or just one day, depending on preference. Classes will be led by Davao-based artist and calligrapher, Carl Chua.

Learn the basics of washes and strokes as you enter of the world of calligraphy with a pointed pen nib and ink. In this workshop by Cebu-based calligraphy artist Coy Barredo, participants will learn about the mechanisms of the pointed pen, and the basic strokes and principles behind using them. There will be hands-on exercises and demonstrations, from writing lowercase letters to writing numerals. Important care tips and instructions will also be shared for the long-term benefit of newbie calligraphers. All materials and light snacks will be provided during the workshop.

Get a dose of Japanese culture at the University of San Carlos’s joint exhibitions with Japan Foundation Manila. The months-long series kicks off with a feature on Ningyo, or Japanese dolls. There are over a dozen kinds of Japanese dolls which will be featured. The exhibit can be found at the University of San Carlos Museum Changing Exhibitions Gallery until the 12th of November, then it transfers to the school’s Learning Resource Center in the Talamban Campus. An exhibition on Buddhist altars will also be featured starting the middle of the month.
